Animal Nutrition Benefits of Sulforaphane
1. Sulforaphane and porcine nutritionInhibiting pathogenic bacteria. Hydrolyzates of glucosinolates, including sulforaphane(SFN), were used as antibacterial compounds on Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococci isolated directly from healthy pig intestinal segments collected from abattoirs in northern Portugal. The results showed that three isothiocyanates, including sulforaphane, were the most effective agents for inhibiting bacterial growth and could be used as potential control agents for pathogenic bacteria in pig feed.
1.1 Disease prevention
Preventing kidney disease. Ochratoxin A(OTA) is considered a key factor in the prevalence of swine kidney disease in Denmark. A study showed that OTA significantly inhibited the nuclear translocation of Nrf2 in porcine renal tubular cells, while SFN could activate the nuclear translocation of Nrf2 inhibited by OTA and improve the binding to antioxidant response elements. Therefore, SFN can alleviate the nephrotoxicity caused by OTA, thereby preventing porcine nephropathy.
Preventing inflammation. Studies have shown that SFN can act as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor to regulate the expression of important immune genes in LPS-induced porcine monocyte-derived dendritic cells(moDCs) through an epigenetic mechanism. SFN-mediated epigenetic downregulation of CD14-LPS-induced TRIF pathway inflammation suggests that SFN may open up new avenues for preventing and alleviating LPS-induced inflammation in piglets.
1.2 Growth-promoting effectResearches showed that SFN enhanced the proliferation of porcine satellite cells and regulated the expression of myogenesis regulators. SFN can be used as a nutritional supplement to promote muscle growth.
2.Sulforaphane and broiler nutritionBroccoli sprout extract containing SFN can act as a regulator of ARE: inducing the expression of exogenous enzymes and antioxidant enzymes regulated by intestinal ARE can reduce oxidative stress in the body. So broccoli sprout extract with SFN can replace essential oils(turmeric oil, oregano oil, thyme oil and rosemary oil) in feed without affecting broiler performance.
3.Sulforaphane and dog nutritionIn 2018, a study published by Oregon State University showed that oral SFN can be absorbed by dogs, SFN metabolites are present in plasma after administration, and SFN can reduce the activity of histone deacetylase. Therefore, the use of SFN supplements may prevent or slow the development of tumour in dogs with cancer.
