Effects of Broccoli Seed Extract on Cancer

  • Cancer is a difficult medical problem to overcome all over the world. Since its discovery in 1992, sulforaphane has been used in various cancer treatments, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer and other cancers. According to data from ClinicalTrials.gov (The North American Clinical Trial Registry), there are 106 clinical trials related to sulforaphane and glucoraphanin registered by the United States, China, Britain, Germany, Japan and other countries. Hopkins University, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, are the three institutions with the most clinical trials. These researches results show that sulforaphane has a significant preventive effect and a good adjuvant therapy effect on cancer.

    Researches

Breast cancer: In 1994, researchers from Johns Hopkins University confirmed in animal models that sulforaphane can reduce the incidence and diversity of tumors in rats treated with carcinogens. In 2013, clinical trials conducted by Johns Hopkins University and Oregon State University (NCT: 00982319, NCT: 0843167) both confirmed that sulforaphane can slow down the growth of breast cancer cells, which is particularly effective for patients with early breast cancer.

Prostate cancer: In 1999, researchers in Stanford University identified sulforaphane as a chemopreventive agent for prostate cancer. In 2014, Oregon Health and Science University published the results of a phase II clinical study. Sulforaphane significantly reduced the level of prostate-specific antigen, which reduced the chance of recurrence after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.

Gastric cancerIn 2002, an animal model experiment conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University showed that sulforaphane had a good antibacterial effect on Helicobacter and blocked the foregastric tumors of ICR mice induced by benzopyrene. In 2009, a clinical trial jointly conducted by Tokyo University of Science, University of Tsukuba and Johns Hopkins University confirmed that daily intake of broccoli sprouts rich in sulforaphane can effectively reduce the colonization of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach and Reduce the sequelae of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Pancreatic cancer: In 2004, a study by the University of Toronto showed that sulforaphane can inhibit the growth of pancreatic cancer tumors in mice.

Liver cancerIn 2005, the results of clinical trials jointly conducted by Johns Hopkins University and Qidong Liver Cancer Institute of China showed that sulforaphane can promote the excretion of aflatoxins from the body and increase the excretion of air pollutants.

Lung cancerIn 2005, animal experiments by American Health Foundation Cancer Center, Institute for Cancer Prevention showed that sulforaphane can reduce the incidence of lung cancer in mice treated with carcinogens. In 2009, a clinical study completed by Johns Hopkins University proved that sulforaphane had a significant effect on preventing lung cancer in smokers. The results of two clinical studies on lung cancer published in 2012 and 2014 respectively showed that taking broccoli sprout beverages containing glucoraphanin and sulforaphane can make the excretion rate of benzene (carcinogen) increased by 61% and the excretion rate of acrolein increased by 23%, thereby reducing the risk of lung cancer caused by air pollutants.

Ovarian cancerIn 2007, a joint study by New York Medical School and Harvard Medical School proved that sulforaphane can enhance the activity of genes that resist proliferation of ovarian cancer cells.
